Greening our fleet
The Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) is the largest single land manager in New South Wales and as such has a large fleet of vehicles to undertake a wide variety of tasks from transporting staff, maintaining infrastructure and even fighting fires. Many of these tasks require heavy duty vehicles or four wheel drives for use in field operations and these are often diesel powered.
Despite these operational constraints, OEH has been implementing the NSW Government's Cleaner Fleet Initiative with some success. The program focuses on vehicles less than 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass and efforts have focused on our vehicle passenger fleet.
OEH's fleet of hybrid electric/fuel vehicles continues to grow and wherever practical, large vehicles are being replaced with smaller 4-cylinder vehicles.
Better use of public and active transport has also resulted in several pool vehicles not being replaced at the end of their lease, which has contributed to reductions in the agency's environmental impact.
