English Report on NPWS management of pest animals
March 2003
Associate Professor Tony English, of the University of Sydney, was commissioned by the Minister for the Environment to undertake a review of the policies and practices used by the NPWS to manage feral animals.
The report was released by the Minister in August 2002. This is the last of four reports prepared by Professor English for the Minister.
The report discusses:
- legislation and policy issues related to the management of feral animals by the NPWS
- strategic initiatives such as threat abatement plans, recovery plans, plans of management and regional pest management strategies
- distribution, impacts and control methods of pest animals in NSW
- a detailed discussion of pest control programs for seven pest animal species on NPWS estate (foxes, wild dogs, feral pigs, rabbits, feral goats, feral cats and feral deer)
- integration of pest animal control programs with other recovery programs
- resources
- competencies and training of staff involved in pest management
- collaboration and community involvement
- contextual issues (habitat degradation, cost sharing, animal welfare issues, exotic disease implications, public perceptions and the media).
