Reducing the threat

NPWS, in consultation with other groups, is committed to a planned approach to reducing the threat of feral cats. NPWS is drawing up a threat abatement plan to assist in reducing the impact of feral cats on threatened species. As part of this process:

• NPWS needs to make sure that the plan links to other plans such as threatened species recovery plans and other threat abatement plans, so that efforts are coordinated.
• We need to understand more about the impacts of feral cat predation on threatened species.
• We also need to gather more information on available management methods which must be humane, effective and efficient. Traditional methods, such as baiting, trapping and shooting, are not effective for broad-scale management programs.

It is not realistic to expect that feral cats can be eradicated from NSW. As resources are limited, they must be allocated where they will be most effective to reduce the threat.
