Discovery programs policy

The NPWS Discovery programs provide educational and recreational experiences to park visitors and raise the profile of NPWS in the community.

Key elements of the policy

  • Discovery activities should be an enjoyable recreational and educational experience and include interpretation of natural and cultural heritage
  • activities should be linked to identified peak holiday times
  • activities outside peak holiday periods may include off-park guided activities
  • funding is managed by NPWS regional offices through proposal submissions, a selective process, a user-pays and/or donation system to help off-set program costs and by funneling back surplus revenue to other conservation and/or education oriented projects.

The National Parks and Wildlife Foundation plays an active role in ensuring adequate sponsorship levels for the program. In these sponsorships, the NPWS will:

  • fulfill sponsor expectations listed in a contract
  • maintain the conservation objectives of the NPWS
  • ensure the needs of the majority of participants are met.

Discovery rangers will:

  • complete at least one day's training including use of 4WD and other specialist equipment as necessary
  • perform alternate tasks consistent with normal duties in cases where activities are cancelled due to unsuitable weather etc
  • wear the NPWS rangers uniform and a name badge.

Use of the Discovery mascot, Wanda the Wombat, is strictly controlled.
