Diagnostic imaging apparatus

The activities of a CRE in this category extends to assessing and measuring (calibrating) diagnostic imaging apparatus for compliance with the requirements for registration as set out in Radiation Guideline 6.

The type of the apparatus that a CRE may assess depends on the conditions of accreditation that the CRE has been issued by the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH), which is based on the qualifications obtained by the applicant.

Only a OEH accredited CRE may assess apparatus and issue a certificate of compliance verifying that the apparatus complies with the mandatory requirements for registration.

Radiation Guideline 6

Guideline 6 Test protocols for parts 2-5 sets out the basic test protocols that must be followed by CREs in the assessment of radiation apparatus for compliance with the mandatory requirements of Parts 2-5 of Radiation guideline 6: Registration requirements & industry best practice for ionising radiation apparatus used in diagnostic imaging.

The current (2004) edition of Radiation Guideline 6 - Registration requirements& industry best practice for ionising radiation apparatus used in diagnostic imaging: Parts 1-6 can be accessed below:

Compliance testing for the mandatory requirements of the mammography radiation guideline (Radiation Guideline 6: Part 1) must be conducted by following the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists, mammography quality control manual (2002).

Radiation Guideline 6 Parts 1-6 may also be purchased as individual booklets from Environment Line by calling 131 555.

Fixed radiation gauges

The accredited person will need to be familiar with the document Recommendations for minimum standards and safety requirements for fixed radiation gauges (Sealed Radioactive Sources) which can be obtained by contacting OEH and the Code of practice and safety guide for safe use of fixed radiation gauges, RPS 13 (2007) (PDF 457k).

The accredited person will need to comply with relevant provisions of the recommendations and the Code, except in so far as any such provision is inconsistent with the Radiation Control Act 1990 and/or the regulations under that Act.

Mutual recognition

A person who is 'registered' in an equivalent occupation in another State or Territory, or New Zealand, may be entitled to apply to OEH, under the Mutual Recognition Act 1992 (Cwlth), for an accreditation related to their occupation.

"Registration" includes the licensing, registration, approval, admission, certification (including by way of practising certificates), or any other form of authorisation, of a person required by under legislation for the carrying on of an occupation.

Click here for information on obtaining a licence to use radiation apparatus or radioactive substances or an accreditation as a consulting radiation expert under the mutual recognition arrangements.

Certificate of compliance

CREs accredited under the Radiation Control Act 1990 to assess radiation apparatus for the purpose of certifying compliance with the requirements for registration must only use certificates of compliance approved by OEH for reporting compliance. Approved certificates of compliance books are available for purchase from OEH but only by appropriately accredited CREs. To order a booklet of certificates, CREs should print and complete the appropriate order form/s and return with fee to OEH, Hazardous Materials, Chemicals and Radiation Section.

CREs must only use books that have been issued to them.
