Licence renewals and variations
Renewals
A licence is valid for either one year or three years and need to be renewed on or before expiry.
Licences may be renewed by completing the renewal form which is sent to licensees approximately six weeks prior to the licence expiring. You can also renew your one year licence and/or advise of changes to your licensee details online - see Radiation Transactions - or by completing and returning the form (renewlicence.pdf 73 kb). Currently a three year renewal licence cannot be processed online and applicants will need to complete and return the application form and appropriate application fee by mail to DECC. The licence is renewed when DECC Hazardous Materials and Radiation Section receives a completed form and the renewal fee.
Expired licences
Where licences have expired, an application and fee for a new licence is required. Radiation apparatus and radioactive substances must not be used, sold or possessed until a new licence has been issued. In some cases additional documentation, including proof of qualifications and experience, may need to be provided. Such cases could include where receiving a licence is dependent upon a current professional registration or the criteria for that licence have changed.
Variations
Radiation licence holders who need to conduct new work or add or replace a condition can apply to have their licence varied. Examples of a variation include upgrading from a provisional licence to a fully accredited licence, adding radiation apparatus or a radioactive substance to an existing licence condition or adding supervision and general exemption conditions to a licence.
To have a licence varied, complete an application to vary licence (varylicence.pdf 215 kb) and pay the appropriate variation fee.
In some cases the fee to vary a licence is waived. See waiving of licence variation fees for details.
