Radiation Safety Officers and Radiation Safety Committees

The Radiation Control Regulation 2003  (the Regulation) provides for the appointment of Radiation Safety Officers (RSOs) and Radiation Safety Committees (RSCs) in workplaces where ionising radiation apparatus or radioactive substances are used.

The function of the RSO or a RSC is to advise and assist an employer or organisation to fulfil their obligations under the Radiation Control Act 1990 and the Regulation to protect employees, members of the public and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation.

The Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) has published Recommendations for Radiation Safety Committees and Radiation Safety Officers (pdf 143kb), a non-mandatory guideline for employers who currently employ an RSO or are considering doing so.
