GARDENERS REMINDED THAT THE DRAIN IS JUST FOR RAIN

With the onset of cooler autumn weather, XYZ's Mayor, Mr/Ms.........., has issued a reminder to all gardening enthusiasts to remember the Drain is Just for Rain.

Launching the autumn phase of the local campaign, Mayor.........., said stormwater pollution is one of the greatest threats to the health of our dams, rivers and oceans. When it rains, water picks up anything in its path and washes it down the drains into our stormwater system and into the rivers and lakes in which we swim, fish or sail.

"Most of us enjoy tending to our gardens but we must be aware that clippings and leaves affect the health of our waterways. Green waste burns up the oxygen levels in the water, which can kill plants and animals that live in their habitat," said Cr..........

"While autumn can be a spectacular time of year, it can also have a detrimental effect on our waterways. More than at any other time of the year, there are many simple things every householder can do to ensure the Drain is Just for Rain."

Residents are advised to sweep leaves from the gutters and driveways regularly and place them on the garden, the compost or the bin and avoid using the hose as a broom.

Pollution traps go part of the way to solving the problem but the Drain is Just for Rain campaign aims to work with the community to stop pollution going down the drain in the first place.

The Drain is Just for Rain campaign is part of a state-wide initiative that has been made possible by a three-year $60 million commitment by the State Government. Local councils have been funded to find solutions to tackling stormwater pollution.
