XYZ's ENVIRONMENTAL SUCCESS - 500 DRAINS STENCILLED
Residents of ABC St, Suburb have shown their commitment to the environment by stencilling XYZ's 500th grate with a fish/eel/swan since it launched its Drain is Just for Rain campaign in ............
The stencils are a highly visual reminder to people that whatever they put down the stormwater drain, such as litter, dog dirt and leaves, ends up polluting our waterways.
XYZ's Mayor, Ms .........., said, "This is a really good example of XYZ's residents' commitment to protecting their own environment. To anyone visiting the area, if they see drains stencilled and posters in windows, they know that we will not tolerate people polluting the stormwater system. We know that the Drain is Just for Rain.
"One of the best things about the campaign is that we have learnt a lot of the 'do's and don'ts' for our drains. YYY school has run a fascinating project on .........., but adults have also learnt that if we are washing our cars, we should do it on the grass rather than having all that detergent flowing into our waterways and beaches.
"We have also learnt that, rather than simply shoving leaves and twigs down the drain, it's best to pick them up and use them for compost or mulch.
"But I believe that we can go further, I am convinced that we can stencil most of the drains in XYZ. If any residents want to stencil the grates on their streets, I will gladly help them."
The Drain is Just for Rain campaign is part of a three-year $60 million commitment by the State Government to tackle stormwater pollution head-on. Most of that money goes to local councils to fund local solutions to stormwater pollution.
