GARDENERS' ENVIRONMENTAL TIPS

With the arrival of spring, residents about to 'spruce up' their gardens are being reminded that the Drain is Just for Rain and there is much gardeners can do to help the environment.

The reminder comes from XYZ's Mayor Cr.........., who said, "There is a lot that we can all do to reduce stormwater pollution and whenever people work in their yards, they can have a significant environmental impact.

"There are some simple things to remember that will ensure that, when gardening, pollutants such as fertilisers, soil, leaves and clippings do not end up polluting our waterways.

"If we sweep up our leaves and clippings to use them for compost or mulch rather than hosing them down the drain, both our gardens and our waterways benefit.

"And if we sweep our driveways and gutters regularly, when a storm comes it means that there is less organic pollution to wash into our waterways which will then use up vital oxygen.

"If gardeners cover piles of sand, soil and mulch, it will be harder for it to be washed down the drain too."

XYZ Council recently won a $.......... grant from the NSW Environment Protection Authority to.......... .......... The grant is part of the State Government's three-year, $60 million campaign to tackle urban stormwater pollution head-on.

Cr.......... said, "Council is doing a lot to reduce stormwater pollution, but if we all remember that the Drain is Just for Rain, then we can all contribute to improving the quality of our waterways."
