......... TONNES OF RUBBISH COLLECTED IN .......... MONTHS
A stormwater pollution trap at .......... has trapped .......... tonnes of rubbish in .......... months.
Plastic bags, leaves and sediment are among the pollution caught before it had a chance to reach our waterways.
Local Mayor .......... said the effectiveness of the traps in catching rubbish showed just how damaging stormwater pollution is to our local waterways.
"In fact, stormwater pollution is the single biggest threat to the health of XYZ's waterways. Every time it rains, water running along our streets, picks up the pollution that lies in its path and washes it down the stormwater drain.
The trap, installed with a grant from the NSW State Government's three-year $60 million campaign, has caught .......... tonnes of pollution since it was installed .......... months ago.
"While the trap goes some way to preventing stormwater pollution ending up in the waterways, it is only one part of the equation.
Mayor of XYZ Council, Cr.......... said, "The best way that we can keep our waterways clean is to remember that the Drain is Just for Rain.
"There are many things that we can all do to reduce stormwater pollution. When you wash the car in the street it has the same impact as washing it in the middle of the river, so why not do it on the grass or over gravel instead?
"We can also make sure that gardening does not pollute the waterways by brushing up leaves and clippings and using them as compost or mulch. And with soil, sand and mulch, its best to keep it covered up so none of it gets blown down the drain.
"Cigarette butts also end up in our waterways, that's why they should be put in a bin, rather than just dropped on the road or down a gutter", said Mayor ..........
