Cleaner production and efficient resource use
Overview
Cleaner production involves reducing environmental impacts along the entire life cycle of a product/service by conserving resources (raw materials, energy and water), eliminating toxic raw materials and reducing the quantity and toxicity of all emissions and wastes.
Cleaner production goes beyond meeting regulatory obligations and looks for further improvements to benefit the company as well as the environment. Owners and managers know their businesses best and can identify inefficiencies and waste with little or no support from cleaner production experts. Often it is little more than good 'housekeeping':
- reusing or recycling 'wastes' rather than sending them to landfill
- reducing or reusing packaging
- maintaining equipment and checking for wasteful compressed air leaks
- turning off equipment when not in use
- installing water saving devices and checking for leaks
