Getting smart about waste
Landscaping construction sites and maintenance procedures tend to produce three basic types of waste: organic, solid and liquid.
Organic waste
- prunings and clippings
- vegetation clearance
- tree trunks and large branches from land clearance
- weeds
- leaf litter, mulch
Solutions and suggested uses
Organic waste can be chipped, mulched, composted and reused on site or sent to an off-site compost facility.

Solid waste
- packaging from site materials
- excess materials, unused products
- rock and soil from excavations
- building materials from demolition
- sediment retained in sediment traps
Solutions and suggested uses
- Buy materials with minimum packaging
- Don't over-order
- Stockpile and reuse it on site
- Recycle it off site or return to the supplier
Send it to an approved landfill site as last resort only.

Liquid waste
- Site clean-up
- Wash down areas
- Brick/tile cutting waste
