NSW Threat Abatement Plan: Invasion of native plant communities by Chrysanthemoides monilifera (bitou bush and boneseed)

September 2006

About this threat abatement plan

Invasion of native plant communities by Chrysanthemoides monilifera (bitou bush and boneseed) was listed as a Key Threatening Process under the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995 in April 1999. Under the Act, the DECC was required to produce a threat abatement plan (TAP) aimed at reducing, abating or ameliorating the threat posed by bitou bush and boneseed to native biodiversity currently listed as threatened or that which may become listed as a result of bitou bush or boneseed invasions.

Following public consultation over the draft plan, the Minister for the Environment approved the threat abatement plan in 2006. This is the first approved threat abatement plan for a weed species in Australia.

The TAP has five broad aims to meet the objective of the Threatened Species Conservation Act:

  1. develop a strategic framework for control targeted to areas where the biodiversity benefit will be greatest
  2. develop and promote best practice management
  3. monitor the effectiveness of control programs
  4. foster community education, involvement and awareness
  5. identify and fill knowledge gaps where possible

In addition the TAP has identified 16 actions to meet these aims and to save native species from bitou bush and boneseed invasion in NSW.

Review of the TAP

Under the Threatened Species Conservation Act all TAPs are to be periodically reviewed. The Bitou Bush and Boneseed TAP states that the plan will be reviewed after 5 years of implementation.

Implementing the Bitou Bush and Boneseed Threat Abatement Plan

The plan is now being implemented along the coast of NSW by the DECC, the five coastal Catchment Management Authorities, the Department of Lands, numerous coastal councils, community groups and private landholders. Several webpages are available to assist in implementing the Bitou bush and Boneseed TAP.
