Better practice guide for waste management in multi unit dwellings

The Better Practice Guide for Waste Management in Multi Unit Dwellings has been developed to assist council staff, architects, residential developers and building management incorporate better practice in the design, establishment, operation and on going management of waste services in residential Multi Unit Dwellings (MUDs).
The Guide outlines various essential elements to be considered when designing a waste management system for medium or high density residential, mixed use and integrated housing developments.
Better Practice encourages appropriate resident behaviour in relation to waste management and increases the amenity, ease of use of waste systems, environmental performance and the reputation of developments with well managed facilities. Better practice waste mangement establishes and maintains services and infrastructure that enables garbage, recycling, organics and bulky waste services to be undertaken in the best way possible in a particular situation to improve resource recovery.
The original Better Practice Guide for Waste Management in Multi Unit Dwellings was produced in 2002. The review process comprised stakeholder workshops, five in total across NSW. The outcomes from the workshops were reviewed and have been integrated into this revised Guide.

Case studies
As part of the review process for the Guide, case studies of better practice waste management in multi-unit dwellings were commissioned. Nine case studies provide some examples of better practice waste management for a variety of MUDs including mixed-use developments, low-rise villas, townhouses, three storey walk-ups, high-rise developments and integrated developments.

Social research report: An Exploration of Recycling in Multi-unit Dwellings

The review of the Better Practice Guide for Waste Management in Multi-unit Dwellings (MUDs) in 2006, revealed a need to find positive ways to encourage the residents in multi-unit dwellings to engage in recycling and to use the facilities available to them. Based on this feedback, in 2007 the OEH commissioned social research to assess the attitudes and behaviour of MUD residents in relation to recycling and resource recovery.
The full report from this research that includes key findings and recommendations is now available.
