Waste and resource recovery

NSW local government waste and resource recovery data report

Since 2006, the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has surveyed local councils in August each year to determine the characteristics and relative performance of domestic resource recovery and waste management services available to residents in NSW.

This annual survey also incorporates the information required under the National Environment Protection Measure (NEPM) for used packaging materials.

The data provided by councils through these surveys is used to calculate overall waste generation and resource recovery rates for each local government area (LGA). When comparing the figures for LGAs it is important to consider regional variations in consumption patterns and available services and any variations in data availability and the interpretation of survey questions.

Domestic kerbside waste and recycling in NSW

During 2007-08, councils in the Sydney Metropolitan Area (SMA) and Extended Regulated Area (ERA) carried out a household residual waste audit as part of the Waste and Sustainability Improvement Payment (WaSIP) program using the Audit Methodology. All of these included audits of household residual waste bins and a number also included recycling and garden organics.

The results of statistical analysis of the waste audit data is available in the Report on the results of waste audits of household kerbside collection systems 2007-2008. The report shows that the average residual bin in the SMA/ERA contains 40% food waste, 11% garden organics and 23% dry recyclables.
