Illegal waste dumping notice
The NSW Government recently introduced legislative changes to tackle illegal waste dumping and protect landowners from unscrupulous dumpers. The changes were originally contained in the Waste Minimisation and Management Amendment Act 1998 and commenced on 15 January 1999. In general terms, they have been brought forward into the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, which commenced on 1 July 1999.
The new laws are aimed at ensuring transporters and owners of waste accept responsibility for lawfully disposing of their waste. They introduce tougher offence provisions for waste transporters and waste owners who are responsible for illegal dumping.
