A State water monitoring strategy for NSW

The New South Wales Government established the State Water Monitoring Coordination Committee (SWMCC) to develop a coordinated, whole-of-government approach to water monitoring in NSW.

Preparation of a State Water Monitoring Strategy for NSW is underway. While the Strategy is being developed, An Interim Approach for Water Monitoring in NSW has been put in place. The Interim Approach establishes a framework and process to ensure a common approach to, and better coordination of, existing programs. The purpose of the Interim Approach is to:

  • identify common protocols for water monitoring in NSW to be used by State agencies, local councils and non-government organisations when conducting water monitoring. This includes using common procedural methods and quality assurance and control provisions
  • identify avenues for accessing and sharing information
  • identify current monitoring programs as a basis for considering future programs.

The State Water Monitoring Strategy will build on the comprehensive NSW water reforms package announced in 1997.

The State Water Monitoring Strategy will provide a coordinated and cost-effective approach to water monitoring in NSW. It will establish a procedural framework of protocols and quality assurance provisions by which water monitoring in NSW will be conducted.

The State Water Monitoring Coordination Committee oversees the development of the Strategy. The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) chairs the Committee on behalf of the Water Chief Executive Officers. The other membership organisations are: Department of Land and Water Conservation, NSW Fisheries, Sydney Catchment Authority, Sydney Water Corporation, Hunter Water Corporation, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, State Forests of NSW, NSW Health, NSW Agriculture, Local Government and Shires Association, NSW Waterwatch, CSIRO, Murray-Darling Basin Commission and NSW Coastal Council.

Data collected under the Strategy will be made publicly available via the Community Access to Natural Resource Information website (www.canri.nsw.gov.au)
