The NABERS rating system

The National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) Program is delivered nationally by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage on behalf of state, territory and Commonwealth governments.

NABERS uses a six star scale to rate the environmental performance of buildings, and has rating tools for energy efficiency, water efficiency, waste management and indoor environmental quality.

NABERS rating scale

NABERS provides waste management and indoor-environment quality star-ratings for offices, as well as energy and water ratings, which are also available for hotels, shopping centres and data centres.

Since 2010, with the introduction of the Commonwealth Building Energy Efficiency Disclosure Act, a NABERS Energy rating assessment has been mandatory during the sale or lease of offices with floor space of more than 2000 sqm.

NABERS is embedded in many environmental policies and programs across Australian jurisdictions, including the NSW Government's Sustainability Policy and the Energy Savings Scheme.

Only accredited assessors are able to undertake NABERS rating assessments. A full list of assessors in your area is available on the NABERS website, along with information to help owners and occupants understand their buildings' resource efficiency and environmental impact, and guidance on how to gain better star-ratings.
