Statement of significance:

No. 9 Cooper Street, Strathfield has historic and aesthetic significance as an excellent intact example of a single storeyed c.1900s -1910 Federation Bungalow style house. The buildings retains its original form, character and detailing including an asymmetrical front facade, steep pitched slate tiled hipped roof with terracotta tiled ridge cresting and decorative brick and rendered chimneys with terracotta pots, face brickwork, front gable ended projecting bay, verandah with turned timber posts on brick piers on a tessellated tiled base. The garden and building make a positive contribution to the Cooper and Roberts Street corner streetscape.

Description

Construction years: 1874-1918
Physical description: A single storey c.1900s -1910 Federation Bungalow located on the corner of Roberts Street has steep pitched slate tiled hipped roof with terracotta tiled ridge cresting and decorative brick and rendered chimneys with terracotta pots. The front facade is asymmetrical and constructed of face brickwork. It features a front gable ended projecting bay, verandah with turned timber posts on brick piers on a tessellated tiled base. Other details include a balustrade timber valence, decorative timber brackets and barge boards, timber framed double hung windows with rendered sills and apron moulds, timber and glass panelled front door with sidelight and highlight windows.

There is a corner gate and curved gravel paths. The driveway and garage is located on the western side of the property. A timber picket fence is on the street boundaries surrounding a large well established garden with hedges, lawn, plants and trees.

Modifications
Replacement of the original front fence.

History

Historical notes: The area of Strathfield within the Burwood Municipality falls within the land grant to Thomas Rowley in c.1799. Early activities in the area included farming, collection of timber and the development of service industries along Parramatta and Liverpool Roads.

Early settlement of the Strathfield district was by wealthy merchants and businessmen who lived in villa estates, as is similar to the development of Burwood and Croydon generally. Strathfield was considered a highly prestigious area of large houses in expansive grounds. A railway station was constructed in Burwood in c.1855, while Strathfield did not receive its station until the mid 1870’s. The new station led to an expansion of Strathfield.

Santa Sabina College was established at Strathfield in January 1894, following the arrival of a group of Dominican sisters from Ireland who purchased land from wine grower, Harold Lindeman.

By the 1890s, many of the early villa estates had been subdivided for speculative development. The Federation period saw the development of many houses under the ‘Garden Suburb’ model, but houses of the Inter-War period also feature strongly within Strathfield’s conservation areas.

The site was part of the Roberts Estate.

Recommended management:

[a] Architectural detailing and decorative elements of the building should be conserved. [b] The form, scale and character of the building, together with its curtilage and streetscape presentation should be maintained. [c] No new openings i.e. windows and doors should be made to the front facade of the building. [d] Any future additions should be generally confined to the rear of the building and should be subordinate to the principal building form. [e] The major garden elements should be retained including significant trees or specimen plantings, retaining walls, stairs etc. [f] The front garden setting and generous side setbacks should be retained.
