Statement of significance:

This picturesque church is of state significance as a landmark in Burwood Municipality and for its architectural quality.

Designer/Maker: John Frederick Hilly
Construction years: 1847-1847
Physical description: Constructed of sandstone, it has a steeply pitched slate roof with terracotta ridge cresting, a crenellated parapet to the square western tower, a spire rising above the and iron palisade fence.
The cemetery contains graves of Burwood pioneers.


Historical notes: Thomas Hyndes in 1847 donated two hectares of land to the church of England for a new church. A church hall and day school were built in 1874 and in January, 1849 St Thomas was opened. It was designed by John Frederick Hilly. Hyndes covered the cost of all building materials and labour. St Thomas' became a parish in 1868.
