Statement of significance:

SIGNIFICANCE - 1993: "The Knoll" has significance through its association with mine owners of the Hunter Region.
It contributes to the association of Speers Point with the growth of Lake Macquarie as a holiday centre for the gentry of the Hunter Region.
Although the designer of the house has not been identified, & it may have had a local builder using off the shelf detailing, it has a fine architectural presence.
It is a fine, even a copybook example of a gentleman's residence in the Federation Bungalow style, but was, like many provincial houses, built ten years after the heyday of the style had passed in the cities.
The house is unmatched elsewhere in Lake Macquarie except for two managerial Residences at Morisset Hospital, designed by the Dept. of Works in 1910.
LEVEL of SIGNIFICANCE - 1993: Regional Significance - high
Local Significance - very high
Date significance updated: 28 May 08
