Statement of significance:

SIGNIFICANCE - 1993: An outstanding Federation Queen Anne "Gentleman's Residence", in original condition, & probably unique in the district.
Built by one prominent local citizen (James Johnston, builder & Shire President) for another (Dr Hocken, 1st resident Medical Officer in the district).
The style would be characteristic of its period & social standing in the big cities, but unique in West Wallsend & surrounding mining villages.
It stands out amid the egalitarian simplicity of most cottages in the district.
The integrity of its detailing & retention of original materials provides an excellent example of a style of architecture & particular use of materials found nowhere else in the district.
With the War Memorial (Item WW-15) & Post Office (Item WW-13), it forms an impressive entrance to the commercial centre of West Wallsend.
LEVEL of SIGNIFICANCE - 1993: Regional significance - moderate,
in a scheduled Conservation Area
Local significance - very high
Group Significance - very high (as a contributing item
in the conservation area)
Date significance updated: 28 May 08

Materials: Frame - timber
Roof - hipped, with terra cotta tiles, gablet on hipped verandah roof
Walls/Cladding - rebated weatherboard

Hipped roof clad in terra cotta tiles, with decorative crested terra cotta ridges & ball finials.
Verandah around 3 sides, with turned wooden posts, spooled frieze & decorative brick balustrade.
Ornate stuccoed brick chimney.
Projecting gabled dormer porch over the front steps forms a grand entrance.
Would be a typical or even modest "Gentleman's Residence" in the city, but stands out as a rare or unique example in the West Wallsend district.
It contrasts very strongly with the primitive and very plain Surgery/shop alongside.

Image A - (Doring Neg.302.03) shows 47 Carrington Street, W. Wallsend, at N-E corner of Hyndes St., viewed from the west across Hyndes Street. This is a modest, provincial, Federation Queen Anne style house, with weatherboard cladding, large double hung sash windows with shutters, Marseilles pattern terra cotta tiled roof with crested ridges & ball finials. The verandah roof is also tiled & has a spool pattern wood frieze. Turned wood verandah posts rest on a solid brick balustrade. The house appears intact externally.
Modifications and dates: No obvious external modifications. Interior not inspected.
Current use: 1993: domestic residence

Historical notes: HISTORICAL NOTES - 1993: Built circa 1904 by James Johnston, prominent local builder and Shire President (who lived opposite at No.52), for Dr James Hocken, West Wallsend's first Medical Doctor.
Dr Hocken lived here from circa 1893 (originally in a circa 1888 house), and used an adjacent shop (Item WW-10) as his Surgery.
