Statement of significance:

The residence is historically significant both as the home of Mr. W Heffernan, Mayor of Maclean and as the maternity hospital known as "Turrawan". It is also a good example of the federation style house and makes a positive contribution to street corner in particular and Wharf Street in general.

Designer/Maker: Turrawan Maternity Hospital
Builder/Maker: F. Robertson
Physical description: Large Federation house with common roof treatment above almost standard floor plan. Skillion verandah to front corner provides nice street corner element. Chimney with pots intact. Good quality original timber detailing to verandahs, brackets, gables, windows etc. Simply landscaped and fenced. Weld mesh fence now partially hidden by a hedge.

Further information: A good example of Federation style house making positive contribution to the street corner. Reinstatement of original verandah balustrade and period fencing would greatly enhance this house.

Historical notes: Cottage built in 1916 for Mr. W Heffernan, Mayor of Maclean and prominent citizen (pers. comm his son).

After some years Mr. Heffernan built the smaller house next door and moved into it for the rest of his life.

From c1937 a Private Hospital presumably owned by Dr H W Carlton and known as "Turrawan", mainly for maternity patients but also for general patients, no operating theatre. Managed by Sisters Higgison and Fish who left Maclean after closure as private hospital and opening of Maternity section at the Lower Clarence Hospital in 1947.

Dr Charlton practiced in Maclean 1937-1950 and had surgery and residence at 1 Wharf Street Maclean owned by other doctors, before and after Dr Charlton, over long period.

Later owners / tenants Miss E Cox, retired Postmistress in Maclean for many years. From 1975 occupied by Mr. & Mrs. S Phelps and owned by son in law Don Watson.
