Statement of significance:

The former Newcastle East Public School (former) is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register as a fine example of a school designed in the Federation Arts and Crafts style by government architect Walter Liberty Vernon. The school is an important reminder of the educational history of the site which housed the oldest continuously operating school in Australia until its move to the site at the corner of Brown and Tyrrell Street. The school central three storey building is now used as the Community Justice Centre. It sits within a group of significant buildings which include Court House and Grand Hotel. The interiors are of interest. The substantial Federation Free style designed building is a good example of Vernon's work. It is prominently located on a corner site within the centre of Newcastle.
