Statement of significance:

Interesting and prominent Federation waterfront Arts and Crafts style house. Part of a collection of early twentieth century substantial houses fronting Shell Cove which typify the early development of the vicinity and contribute to the picturesque qualities of the peninsula.

Description

Physical description: Two storey brick house with roughcast rendered upper storey, octagonal corner bay with faceted roof and as enclosed verandah bay with terracotta shingled spandrel between floors. Roof is gabled and clad in slate.This building is designed in the Federation Arts and Crafts style.

Modifications and dates: Converted to two flats, involving significant interior alteration. Face brickwork to ground floor has been painted, modern deck on the waterfront elevation, carports attached to the rear elevation. Site has been subdivided into 3 lots and new buildings constructed on both the waterfront and streetfront lots, obscuring the building from both these directions.

History

Historical notes: First appears in Council rates books in 1908 as 'Edzell House', owned and occupied by a Miss Emily Leahy.
