Heritage Inventory sheets are often not comprehensive, and should be regarded as a general guide only. Inventory sheets are based on information available, and often do not include information on landscape significance, interiors or the social history of sites and buildings. Inventory sheets are updated by Council as further information becomes available. An inventory sheet with little information may simply indicate that there has been no building work done to the item recently: it does not mean that items are not significant. Further research is always recommended as part of preparation of development proposals for heritage items, and is necessary in preparation of Heritage Impact Assessments and Conversation Management Plans, so that the significance of heritage items can be fully assessed prior to submitting development applications.
Note: The State Heritage Inventory provides information about heritage items listed by local and State government agencies. The State Heritage Inventory is continually being updated by local and State agencies as new information becomes available. Read the OEH copyright and disclaimer.

Physical description: One of a single storey pair of semi-detached houses (nos. 28 & 30 Clarke Road) built of rusticated coursed sandstone with terracotta tiled gabled roof. Symmetrical around the party wall, each house has a projecting gabled bay and an entrance porch. Gable end has weatherboards on No. 30 with short timber finial on each. A large dormer on No. 30 is of modern materials and is out of scale. Windows to the gabled bays consist of a pair of timber-framed double-hung sash windows with a shingled skillion rain hood above carried on timber brackets. Extensions to the rear of the building step up the hillside behind. This building is designed in the Federation Queen Anne style.
Physical condition and/or
Archaeological potential:
Minor Alteration
Modifications and dates: Unsympathetic dormer window added to No. 30. Entry porch infilled on No. 30.
Former use: State Themes: Urban settlements. Building styles.

Historical notes: Clarke Road was created around the turn of the century following the reclamation of the heads of Neutral Bay and Careering Cove during the 1890's. It provided relatively easy access to the foreshores around Neutral Bay, compared to the existing route from North Sydney via William Street (now Kurraba Road) and was largely resumed from the property of the Loxton family.
