Statement of significance:

The house at 36 Bolton Street, also known as Swift's House, is of significance for Parramatta for historic, aesthetic and associative reasons, and as a representative example of quality Federation period houses in the local area. The house was built for William Thomas Swift, one time Mayor of Granville. The house is readily identifiable as part of the historic building stock of the area, and makes a strong contribution to the streetscape.

Description

Construction years: 1900-
Physical description: Single storey brick house with pyramid hipped roof and bullnosed verandah with hip corners, returning to sides. Changes include roofing, originally slate now covered with concrete tiles, new picket fence and posts at front and side, painted brick on house sides. Rendered brick chimneys with cornice decoration and Chinese lanterns survive. Verandah is supported on cast iron columns with cast iron brackets. Windows have sloping brick sills. Front door has transom light above sidelight and a five-panelled door with two small glazed panes above a large square glazed pane with two timber bolection mould panels below lock rail.

History

Historical notes: Land subdivided as Lackey's Estate c. 1904. House built c. 1912-15 for William Thomas Swift, a retired grazier from Burrinjuck. Swift became an alderman on Granville Council and Mayor in 1921. He invested in local property and built the shops at the corner of Guildford Road and Railway Street, known as Swift's Buildings. National Trust (Parramatta Branch): Land subdivided as Lackey's Estate c.1904 House built c.1912-1915 for William Thomas Swift, a retired grazier from Burrinjuck.
