History

Historical notes: After the Granville Borough Council was established in 1885, it met in temporary premises. Soon however, a site in the Lea Estate facing Carlton Street was purchased for a Town Hall. Work commenced in 1888. The foundation stone was laid by John Nobbs on 5 September 1888. The building was opened with considerable ceremony on 16 January 1889. It then consisted of the front portion only containing offices and a Council Chamber 32 ft x 32 ft. For a time the building housed the municipal library. In 1900, the large brick hall running westwards behind the front section was erected. National Trust (Parramatta Branch): Foundation stone laid by John Nobbs on 5th September 1888.
