Statement of significance:

The house at 6 Crown Street is of significance for the local area for historical and aesthetic reasons and as a representative example of quality Federation Bungalow houses in the local area. The house, built c. 1910, makes an important contribution to the streetscape, additionally enhanced by the adjacent historic houses in Crown Street, which collectively illustrate the development history of the locality. Its name, reflective of the idealistic attempt to create an international language, is of interest to followers of the Esperantist ideas.

Description

Construction years: 1918-
Physical description: Single storey Federation house of red brick with slate roof. The facades are of tuck pointed cavity brick walls, with contrast brick stringline, contrast brick quoins at corners and around window openings, on rendered foundations. Gambrel roof with projecting gables to side and front elevations has louvres in point of gables with painted vertical and diagonal strap work on spatterdash infill. Slate roofing has terracotta crockets, horns and ridge capping. Three tall spatterdash chimneys with brick caps and brick strap work and Chinese lantern pot. Verandah is slated, under skillion roof extending from main roof, across front to projecting gable and returning to east side. Verandah floor is concrete, with marble edge and steps, and it is supported on paired incised timber posts set on brick piers with rendered caps. Shaped, arched timber valance is present between verandah posts. Windows have sloping brick sills and soldier brick curved arches. Front windows are in groups of three, with multicoloured panes, and an awning with Edwardian decorative timber ladder brackets with ripple iron skillion roof. Exterior doors have segmented arches over transom light and Victorian panelled door with leadlight in trapezoidal glazed panel above lock rail. Transom light over half-sidelights and Federation panelled door with leadlight trapezoidal panel above lock rail three vertical timber panels below. Original door furniture. Other features include roughcast stucco gables, sandstone gutters in the street. Fence is brick rendered and shaped fence with wire mesh panel attached to pipe frame gate.
