Statement of significance:

The house at 11 Fennell Street is of significance for the local area for historical and aesthetic reasons and as a representative example of a house which demonstrates the stylistic transition from late Victorian to early Federation detail. The house, built c. 1890, is readily identifiable as part of the historic building stock of the area and strongly contributes to the streetscape.

Description

Construction years: 1890-
Physical description: Single storey house built in Flemish bond, tuck pointed brick, with hipped slate roof with ornamental terracotta ridge capping. Concrete paved verandah with bullnose roof, cast iron posts and valence terminates against projecting steep gabled wing which has inverted scallop timber barge board and turned finial. There is a bulls-eye louvre ventilator in the gable. Verandah is decorated with cast iron spandrels in shield design and fine cast iron frieze. Two chimneys made of rendered brick with corbels with stringline are retained. Window to projecting bay has been replaced, and hood removed. Side windows have sandstone sills and soldier brick arches. Rendered pedimented lintel is over gable window. French door with glazed panels above lock rail and bolection mould panels below has transom light over. Front four panelled timber door and sidelights has two glazed panels above lock rail with bolection timber moulded panels below. Front door has name Longford etched into the transom. Original picket fence is replaced with new iron palisade fence.

Historical notes: Land subdivided in 1880s. This house appears on the 1895 Detail Survey. National Trust (Parramatta Branch): MW says: Showing transition from late Victorian to early Federation.
