Statement of significance:

This item is of historical significance because it provides evdence of the history of amenities and services in the local area. The barrier formed by the river was a major factor in development as late as 1880, at which time it was only bridged at Church Street, Parramatta. In the 1880's both the Newlands (Gasworks) and Gladesville Bridges were opened.

History

Historical notes: In March 1878 a petition was presented to Parliament by the people of Parramatta (who had already subscribed a large sum of money for this work) for the erection of a bridge at the foot of Harris Street. Work on the bridge was completed in 1885.
