Statement of significance:

The house Tregothan, at 144 Good Street is of significance for Parramatta for historical and aesthetic reasons, and as a rare and representative example of quality Federation Queen Anne villas in the area. The building is very prominent in the streetscape and strongly contributes to the character of the wider area, presenting as intact when viewed from the publicly accessible areas.

Description

Construction years: 1910-
Physical description: Large two storey house of tuckpointed red brickwork with hipped and gabled slate roof with terracotta capping, surmounted by two large spatterdash and brick chimneys with brick cornice, corbels and dentils and Chinese lanterns on each chimney. The house is situated on a generous corner block and has a well established garden. Features include gablet roof, hip with projecting gables to both street elevations, two spatterdash gables with porch gable, all with timber strap work. Side elevation has large timber gable with timber louvre ventilators and spatterdash infill over verandah. Two storey skillion verandahs are on north and east sides, with timber floors, paired turned timber posts and stiff brackets carved in arabesques. First floor columns are set on timber shingled balustrade with bobbin ladder decoration below handrail, while the ground floor columns are set on brick piers with bullnose brick balustrade and dentils below. there is painted timber shingled skirt with louvred window infill on brick balustrade. Verandah decoration includes timber valance and brackets in Arabesque design to both floors. Windows have segmented arches and timber decorated sills. Front door is Federation two panelled timber door with brass letter slot in lock rail. Above is a square leadlight panel with four narrow decorated panels, and each panel contains a flower and leaf decoration. Fence is of brick piers with sandstone caps connected by galvanised pipe over brick panels with sandstone brick coping and gate is cyclone wire set in tube frame with wrought iron scroll pattern across top.
