Statement of significance:

The house at 3 Grandview Street is of significance for the local area for historical reasons and as a representative example of residential architecture of the Federation period in this area. The house is identifiable as part of historic building stock and contributes to the streetscape.

Construction years: 1914-
Physical description: Single storey brick Federation cottage with gablet roof clad with corrugated iron, originally of four room layout, with front bullnosed and hipped verandah. Tuck pointed brick walls to front and rendered side elevation. Brick chimney with stepped corbels and two Chinese lantern pots. Verandah has paired timber posts set on brick piers with rendered coping, turned spindles in ladder valance and floor of tessellated tiles and slate steps. Windows have sloping brick sills. Front door has transom light above five panelled door with three coloured glazed panels above lock rail and timber bolection mould panels below. Fence is timber picket, with matching gate. Additions include a townhouse development at rear.

Historical notes: Land subdivided c. 1913 by H. A. Veron. Shown on Water Board plan of Nov 1925 as "Loretta". National Trust (Parramatta Branch): Shown on Water Board map as Loretta in 1925. | Owner of N0.3 Grandview St. says Keith Houison and sister Gwenda lived here for some time. Possibly after they sold the Bond House Church Parramatta in 1961. | SD 1932: Juett, Henry "Loretto" | SD 1930: Juett, Henry "Loretto" | SD 1924: Juett, Henry "Loretto" | Land originally grant to Reverend Samuel Marsden. Sold to Pieter Laurentz Campbell in 1835? Peter L Campbell was temporary assistant treasurer and Police magistrate to Parramatta. he left his wife and children in 1837 returning to England. He never returned to his family. The property was sold to Samuel Marsden's daughter Jane in 1838 and remained in the family until 1876 after the death of Jane. Loydd Waddy bought the land and the house in 1911?? later convincing The Kings School board that they should develop the school into an English grammar type school. The school subdivided the land and the north side of Thomas Street was subdivided into housing lots in 1918-9?. |
