Statement of significance:

Group of houses at 82-88 Harris Street is of significance for the local area for historical and representativeness reasons. Built c.1898, they are readily identifiable as part of historic building stock and strongly contribute to the Harris Park West conservation area due to similarities in age, design and materials.

Description

Construction years: 1898-
Physical description: Four single storey Victorian cottages, all with hipped corrugated iron roofs. House No. 82 has rendered brick walls, No. 84 weatherboard walls and Nos. 86 and 88 have brick walls. Houses Nos. 82, 86 and 88 have hipped roofs with projecting gable fronts. No. 84 has gabled roof with lower gable at rear extending north from side wall. Chimneys at Nos. 84 and 88 are made of brick with stepped corbels. All houses have verandahs across front only. At Nos. 82, 86 and 88, verandah stops at projecting gable. Verandah at No. 88 has bullnose corrugated iron roof, while Nos. 82 and 86 have skillion verandah roofs. At No. 84, main corrugated iron roof is extending over verandah. Verandah supports at No. 82 are new timber posts set on painted brick piers and balustrade. At No. 84, verandah roof is supported by timber posts stop chamfered. Simple timber brackets are removed along with lining board three-quarter screen at each end. At No. 86, verandah roof is supported by full brick piers and balustrade with soldier brick coping. At No. 88, verandah has turned timber half-columns and brackets set on brick balustrade. This verandah is decorated with timber bobbin spindles in ladder valance and has slate step and tessellated floor tiles. Other houses have either tiled or concrete floors. All houses have brick window sills except for No. 84. This house have flush timber front door with transom light above. No. 88 has transom light over a Federation five panelled door with timber panels below lock rail and coloured glazed centre panel with two glazed panels above. Nos. 82 and 86 have modern front doors. Front fence for Nos. 82 and 88 is wire mesh, for No. 84 is round top metal fence, while for No. 86 is low brick fence with soldier brick coping and saw tooth brick decoration below and wrought iron gate.
