Statement of significance:

The house at 8 Hewlett Street is of significance for Parramatta LGA for historical and aesthetic reasons, and as a representative example of Victorian period residences in the area. It has additional significance for the Granville local area for its contribution to the streetscape character, enhanced by the similarities in age, design, use and materials between this house and the adjoining Nos. 4 and 6 Hewlett Street.

Construction years: 1910-
Physical description: Single storey single fronted Federation residence constructed of brick with gablet hip iron roof, bullnose verandah, ornate strapped chimneys and scalloped valance boards. It features red tuck pointed brick walls with dark brick quoins, timber louvre ventilator in gablet, three tall brick chimneys with dark brick strap work and two stepped chimneys at rear. Two terracotta pots survive on rear chimney only. Verandah has a floor of tessellated tiles and Pebblecrete edges, shaped stop chamfered posts set on brick piers with dark brick rounded edges, and multi-paned coloured glazed panels in end walls. Windows have sloping rendered brick sills with open scroll decoration below and soldier brick arches. Fence is round top metal fence with wire mesh panel attached to pipe frame gate. Front door has a transom light and sidelight on right hand side with large stencilled glazed panel above lock rail, four bolection mould panels with risers below. Other features include curved eight-stepped Pebblecrete stairs leading to entrance. Architectural style is Federation Arts and Crafts.

Historical notes: Built 1910. Until September 1907, the history of this site is the same as No. 6 Hewlett St. When William Adam drew up his will in September 1907 he made no mention of this brick cottage. It appears to have been built for the devizees of Adam. In 1914 it was clearly marked on a survey plan of this area. National Trust (Parramatta Branch): TK - Land owned by William Adam who built house next door at N0.6 1914 Survey Map shows this house.
