Statement of significance:

The house at 18 Hewlett Street is of significance for Parramatta LGA for historical and aesthetic reasons, and as a representative example of quality Federation period residences in the area. It has additional significance for the Granville local area for its contribution to the streetscape character, enhanced by the similarities in age, design, use and materials between this house and the adjacent houses.

Construction years: 1901-
Physical description: Federation bungalow of brown tuck pointed brick with red brick coping and Marseilles tiled roof with exposed rafters. The building uses its corner site to advantage with gables designed to enhance the aspect. The rough cast render pattered gables are an important feature of this building, as are the elaborate verandah posts and valence boards and casement windows. Gablet hip roof has projecting flying gable to front and side elevations, splayed gable on corner. Decorative timber barge boards in flying gable have spatter dash and strap work supported by decorative brackets with a bay window below. Verandah roof is under Marseille tiles extending from main roof around splayed corner over verandah across front to projecting gable and return to west. Verandah is supported on paired timber tapered posts set on brick piers and balustrade with rendered coping and spatter dash rectangular niches below. Verandah decoration includes scrolled decorative timber valance and brackets. Verandah floor is of tessellated tiles with white marble edges and steps. Windows have sloping brick sills with rectangular niches below. Exterior doors include a French window on verandah. Front door has a transom light above timber door with three small glazed panes across top of door, while below lock rail there are timber bolection mould panels. Fence is solid brick fence with bullnose brick coping, brick piers and wrought iron gate. Mature pine trees and Jacarandah in front yard add to the setting of this Federation Arts and Craft bungalow.

Historical notes: Built 1900-01. Vacant land bought in June 1900 by Thomas Carson, railway employee of Granville. This house was built for him and he had moved in by 1901. It was named 'Loch Marie' and remained his house until he died in 1918. Thomas Carson was a member of a prominent local family which also had ties with the Bellingers. National Trust (Parramatta Branch): TK - Land bought by Thomas Carson in 1900. By 1901 he was living here. Carson was a railway employee and a member of an important family in district.
