Statement of significance:

The house at 24 Margaret Street is of significance for Parramatta for historical and aesthetic reasons, and as a representative example of quality Federation period houses in the area. The house is readily identifiable as part of the historic building stock of the area, it is prominent in the streetscape and strongly contributes to its character, and relates to other houses of similar date in the same street.

Description

Construction years: 1914-
Physical description: Single storey red brick Federation residence with slate roof with terra-cotta ridging. Facade was built in tuck pointed stretcher bond, with bands of contrasting colour bricks and dark brick quoins. Elaborately carved timber barge board on projecting gable with finial, timber valence board, original door with sidelights and casement windows of coloured glass strongly contribute to its character. Roof is hip with projecting gable front with decorative finial and fretted timber barge boards. Chimneys are brick, with corbels. Verandah is skillion, extending from main roof, across front to projecting gable - roof extends across gable as awning. Verandah floor is of tessellated tiles with marble edges and steps, supported on turned timber columns, decorated with alternate timber ladder panels and incised geometric panels in frieze. Windows have marble wide flat sills (on front windows only), i.e. skillion metal awnings supported by turned brackets (along side elevation only). Exterior doors are replacement (aluminium) French doors under verandah. Fence of wrought iron panels set in timber posts with wrought iron gate.

Historical notes: Built 1914. Land was bought January 1914 by Hilda May Frost, wife of Stephen Frost, warehouseman of Granville. The house is shown as being under construction on a plan of May 1914.
