Statement of significance:

The cottage at 17 Prince Street, Granville is of significance for the local area for historical and aesthetic reasons and as a representative example of Federation-period timber cottages in the area. The house, built c. 1911-1912, is readily identifiable as part of the historic building stock of the area and contributes to its character. The cottage is additionally significant as the house of Arthur Bourne, one of the major builders in early Granville.

Description

Construction years: 1904-
Physical description: Single storey weatherboard cottage with projecting gable and gablet corrugated iron roof parrallel to the street. The facade is ashlared. Original bullnose verandah returning to one side has timber fretwork and a scalloped bargeboard in the clover leaf pattern. Faceted bay below gable with flat roof. Tall rendered brick chimney with stepped cornice and dentils below. Verandah retains original timber floor and stop chamfered timber posts, and a side coloured glazed panels between two posts on the west. Exterior doors have transom light over French doors with bolection mould panels below and glass panels above. Also a timber four panelled door onto west verandah. Front door has transom lights and sidelights, around timber five panelled door with three upper panes glazed. Fence is decorative, with incised tops on timber picket fence and matching timber picket gate. Additions include an early attachment at rear with steep gabled roof, possibly kitchen or barn.

History

Historical notes: Arthur Bourne, builder, Cowper Street, Granville, bought this land and the lot behind for œ40 in 1903. In 1904, he took out two mortgages to build this dwelling. By 1906 he was living in this house. Arthur Bourne & Son was stated by Fowlie to have been one of the major builders in early 20th Century Granville. National Trust (Parramatta Branch): Arthur Bourne, builder Cowper Street Granville, bought this land and the lot behind for 40 pounds in 1903. in 1904 he took out two mortgages to erect these building. By 1906 he was living in this house. Fowlie states Arthur Bourne & Son were one of the major builders in the twentieth century. | |
