Statement of significance:

The house at 85 The Avenue, Granville is of significance for the local area for historical and aesthetic reasons and as a representative example of quality Federation Queen Anne Bungalows in the area. The house, built c. 1910, is readily identifiable as part of the finest historic building stock of the area and strongly contributes to its character. The house is additionally significant as the home of Henry Alfred Membrey, a known local resident that became Mayor of Granville in 1922.

Description

Construction years: 1910-
Physical description: Single storey brick Federation residence with terracotta tiled roof on cavity brick walls with dark brick string lines above and below windows. Roof construction is gablet hip with a projecting gable to main elevation and a large hip projecting to the side street. The decorative elements include splatterdash in gable and timber strap work, the decorated roof ridge capping and finials, and the tall brick chimney with brick steps and strapwork with a Chinese lantern. Skillion verandah extends from main roof, around corner to projecting gable and hip, supported on timber open scroll valance set on fluted Corinthian columns, and with floor of large ceramic tiles. Windows have flat metal skillion awnings supported by timber ladder brackets, dark brick arches above (also above doors), and corniced rendered brick sills with open scroll decoration below sills. Exterior doors (including main front door) have Queen Anne arch transom light with leadlight decoration and timber door leading onto verandah. Property fence is low, of red brick, with a row of decorative Besser blocks below brick coping, and with a wrought iron gate.

History

Historical notes: This land was bought in 1909 by Henry Alfred Membrey, foreman boilermaker. The house was built in 1910, financed by three mortgages. The dwelling was extant by March 1914, when it was marked on a survey plan. In 1922, Membrey was Mayor of Granville.
