Statement of significance:

The house at 28 Marion Street, Parramatta is of significance for Parramatta LGA for historical reasons and as a representative example of Federation period residences in the area. The house presents as intact when viewed from the street and strongly contributes to the streetscape, additionally in unison with other historic buildings near-by.

Construction years: 1910-
Physical description: Single storey weatherboard Federation freestyle building under a hipped corrugated iron roof with projecting front room and gable and a kitchen wing at rear. Front room gable has decorative scalloped bargeboards and finial, two slender windows with bracketed awning over. Skillion verandah across remainder of street facade has timber posts and brackets and cast iron frieze and spandrels in snowflake design, with diagonal lattice infill on timber tongue and groove balustrade. High unsympathetic street boundary fence is in poor condition. Windows have fluted timber decorated sills. Front door is a replacement.

Historical notes: No 28 does not appear on the 1895 map. It was built before 1924 when it was owned and occupied by a clerk called Henry T Oberman. By 1930 Oberman had leased the cottage to George Baxter, while he himself lived at No 13 Marion Street. Oberman died around 1932.
