Statement of significance:

Cottage at 55 Cowper Street is of significance for Parramatta LGA for historical and aesthetic reasons, and as a representative example of Federation period modest residences in Parramatta area. It has additional significance for the local area for its contribution to the streetscape character, enhanced by the similarities in age, design, use and materials with the adjoining cottage at No. 57 and other adjacent historic buildings.

Description

Construction years: 1911-1912
Physical description: Brick cottage with narrow frontage. It features Marseilles tile roof on front slope with flat terracotta shingle tiles on the side slope of the roof. Gablet to main ridge end is repeated on front hip face, with terrcotta finials. Turned timber posts to verandah have lost brackets and frieze. Front facade wall is tuckpointed, with stone sill to paired front windows. Other features include contrasting blue brick bands and a simple chimney with corbelled cap. The house is a close match to the adjoining No. 57

History

Historical notes: Land purchased in September 1910 by William Kay, auctioneer of Granville for £125/18/-. This cottage was built with its neighbour No 57 in 1911-12. They were occupied by tenants in 1912. Both cottages are shown on the Water Board Details Survey of May 1914. W. F. Kay later became Mayor of Granville, and qualified as a solicitor.
