Statement of significance:

Grand early twentieth century residence of unusual design. One of many fine Darley Road residences overlooking Centennial Park.

Construction years: 1910-
Physical description: Grand two-storey mansion, about 1910. Spoiled by enclosure of side verandahs and balconies, and painting o fbrickwork to front balcony. Glazing may also be replacement. Otherwise little altered. Wide symmetrical front. Two turreted bays with deep recessed verandah and balcony between longer verandahs and balconies on each side. All front columns, balustrading and decoration are of stone, mostly classical in design. Magnificent main door has its own arched recess. Roughcast render and stonework on turrets also of special note. Enjoys elevated site with beautifully landscaped lawn are above stone retaining wall.


Historical notes: Built about 1883 by John Starkey a famous soft drink manufacturer. Starkey was also an Alderman on Randwick Council. The solid Victorian mansion with its eastern tower has long been converted into flats. Smithfield Avenue to the north of the building leads west to Bardon Park. According to early records, this reserve was once known as Smithfield Park, being dedicated in June, 1886.
