History

Historical notes: Raleigh Park, Todman Avenue, was the centre of the Australian tobacco industry. Named after Sir Walter Raleigh who introduced tobacco to England, the 14 hectares (35 acres) site was purchased in 1911 from G. F. Todman. Initially a number of companies were involved in establishing Raleigh Park. The first factory building, opened in 1913, was designed by architects, Halligan and Wilton. In 1926 the administration building was erected to the design of architects, Joseland and Gilling. This building stands close to Todman Avenue and nearly opposite Carminya Avenue. Raleigh Park will be remembered by many for the firm of W.D. and H.O. Wills, manufacturers of tobacco products. Future of the site now uncertain.
