Description

Physical description: A single storey sandstone Federation style dwelling on a corner site with main roof enclosing veranda on two sides. Projecting gable facing Verdun Street with decorative infill panel and projecting bay window. The walls of the house are rusticated sandstone and the roof Marseille tiles. Due to the slope of the street the house is sited above street on a rock retaining wall. There is a mature garden and the cast iron lace valence and balustrade have been painted in a traditionally appropriate colour scheme even though they are not original. History

Historical notes: The subject property is part of 1200 acres granted by Governor Brisbane to merchant James Chandler in 1831. The land was first auctioned as part of the Ocean View Estate in 1883. The subject house appears to have been built between 1910 and 1920, for Frederick and Muriel Lavender. Following Frederick’s death in 1938, Muriel remained at the subject house until her death in 1945 (‘Deaths’, 24 April 1945).
