Statement of significance:

The timber cottage is historically significant as one of the few houses built in the Sans Souci area at the beginning of the twentieth century, predating general development by about twenty years. The cottage provides physical evidence of the early development of the 1889 Sans Souci Township Estate. The timber cottage has aesthetic significance as a Federation cottage located on a prominent corner. The timber cottage is an excellent representative example of a Federation timber cottage in the Rockdale area.

Description

Construction years: 1900-
Physical description: Victorian weatherboard cottage, single storey, recently well restored with attention to detail. Gabled roof covered with galvanised iron. Decorative barge boards tipped with turned timber finial. Porch at front supported by simple squared timber posts. Timber picket fence at front. The rear yard has been cut off from the house by a paling fence. The original outside toilet is still extant but on the other side of the fence. It has not been restored. The original detached weatherboard kitchen at rear has recently been removed and replaced with a sympathetic skillion addition.

History

Historical notes: The land on which this house is built was first auctioned to William Barton on the 20th September 1853. The land was later subdivided as the Sans Souci Township Estate in 1889. The house was built c. 1900.
