Statement of significance:

The house at 87 Harrow Road, Bexley is historically significant as evidence of the development of the Bexley area and this section of Harrow Road at the end of the 19th century. The building is a good representative example of Federation houses in Rockdale and is aesthetically significant for its contribution to the historic character of Harrow Road..

Description

Physical description: A narrow single storey Federation style house with hipped roof and front facing gable. The roof has Marseille tiles with terracotta ridge and finials and the walls are face brick. The building has a front veranda with a bull nosed roof resting on timber posts with timber brackets and timber valence. Two of the timber posts still rest upon brick piers with sandstone capping. The front fence has the same detailing where it has not been removed for the driveway. Part of the floor of the veranda has been removed to accommodate a car space in front of the dwelling. There is a bay window at the front with its sashes hidden behind security screens.

History

Historical notes: The subject property is part of 1200 acres granted by Governor Brisbane to merchant James Chandler in 1831. The land was first auctioned as part of the Ocean View Estate in 1883. The house appears to have been built between 1910 and 1920, when Arthur Littley was the occupant. By 1930 Robert J Burns was in residence at the house.
