Statement of significance:

This Federation house is historically significant as part of the development of the commuter suburb in the Rockdale area, and as evidence of the early development of the Ocean View Estate. This house is aesthetically significant as an intact Federation detached cottage built in the Rockdale area and is a significant contribution to the streetscape of Gladstone Street.

Description

Physical description: An unusual red brick Federation style house with a patterned slate hipped roof incorporating two faceted roofs and small gablet ventilator. The two small roofs are aligned over two faceted bay windows beneath the ogee veranda roof. The cast iron veranda posts have iron brackets and lace valences with bull nose roof, and hipped slate roof. Tessellated tiled veranda floor. The walls of the fa├žade are constructed of Flemish bond brick work with red oxide. The side walls have been painted.

History

Historical notes: The land on which this dwelling is built was first granted to James Chandler on the 19th October 1831 by Governor Brisbane (1300 acres).
The land was first auctioned as the Ocean View Estate on the third March 1883.
