History

Historical notes: The subject property is part of 1200 acres granted by Governor Brisbane to merchant James Chandler in 1831. The land was first auctioned as part of the Ocean View Estate in 1883. By 1923 Thomas Francis Gibbons, JP, formerly of Harrow Road, and his wife Sarah Lydia (nee Moore) occupied the subject house (‘Deaths’, Brisbane Courier, 23 May 1923). Gibbons was for 52 years an employee of the Gas Light Company and was a senior freemason, officer of the Rockdale Congregational Church and founding member of the St George Bowling Club (‘Mr T F Gibbons’, SMH, 21 September 1929). Thomas and Sarah Gibbons died while in residence at the subject house, in 1929 and 1930 respectively.
