Statement of significance:

This house which is one of the Taylor Street Group, is historically significant as part of the development of commuter suburbs in the Rockdale area. The house is aesthetically significant as the part of the only group of Federation semi-detached cottages built in the Rockdale area and makes a significant contribution to the streetscape of Taylor Street.

Description

Construction years: 1914-1914
Physical description: One of a pair of single storey Federation Semi detached houses that are part of a group of 4 pairs. The site slopes from back to front so that the house is above street level by at least 1200mm. The house is accessed by a series of steps with tiles on the risers. Under the verandah the wall is stone and above the low veranda wall is brick with a pair of timber posts above. The party wall between the two houses extend to the limit of the veranda and then is articulated to follow the slope of the steps. The fa├žade and veranda is face brick with a red lead wash. There is a pair of windows to the side of the door which is located adjacent to the party wall. The roof has been reclad and the party wall has been extended through the roof. The front facing gablet has been removed and the side chimney has also been removed. There is a "Victorian" style steel palisade fence on a masonry base.

History

Historical notes: The subject property is part of 1200 acres granted by Governor Brisbane to merchant James Chandler in 1831. The land comprising the subject properties was subdivided c1885, although the houses were not built until c1914. The subject houses were built as 8 semi-detached houses in four pairs, apparently for speculative purposes. The occupants in 1920 are as follows: No 16 Frederick Mears; No 18 Mrs Adella Norris; No 20 Mr Woods; No 22 Harold Taylor; No 24 John Kelso; No 26 Thomas MacPherson; No 28 Mrs Mary Dent; No 30 Richard A Counsell. The occupants in 1930 are as follows: No 16 William E Slater; No 18 H Creber; No 20 Percival R Woods; No 22 John Gammel; No 24 William Adamson; No 26 William Gillam; No 28 George E Vickery, snr; No 30 Gordon R Rogers.
